A typical game lasts approximately 30 minutes. With Quick Count, you can complete passes, run the ball, kick field goals and stop your opponent's big play - all with a 54-card deck that fits in your pocket, purse, briefcase, or backpack.

Each deck of Quick Count features three main cards: Run, Pass and Catch. Each card has yardage ranging from five to 75 yards. The deck also includes one special field goal and one penalty card.

Players get three cards in their hand and try to move down field by playing cards face up on the table. In order to complete a "pass play" you must play a "pass card" and a "catch card" with matching yardage. The goal is to move downfield to score a touchdown. The trick is that you must move exactly 100 yards - so if you are 10 yards from the end zone you cannot make a 20-yard pass or run. Because of this rule, sometimes you move down field very quickly but end up getting stuck in the "red zone" for a while.

There is plenty of strategy each step of the way in this fast-paced game. Should you move down field five or 10-yards at a time, or should you take a chance and try for the big play? There are big plays in the deck - such as a 75-yard pass and catch. However, the odds are much greater the bigger the play. You also have to be on the ball and know where your opponent is at all times, so you don't throw the wrong card to the discard pile and give him a card that he can immediately use.

Quick Count is fast, strategic and competive. One game might be low-scoring; the next might be high-scoring. Often the games are very close, but sometimes you might be on one side of a big win or a big loss. Each Quick Count game is different. You will want to play over and over!
Jeff_Spelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00955384809598312460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4760511446457612320.post-53576333301233611832007-12-06T12:56:00.000-05:002008-12-10T17:26:36.510-05:00Quick Count Featured in Holiday Gift Guide CinWeekly has included Quick Count in their annual Holiday Gift Guide, "...28 ideas for all the folks on your holiday shopping list."

Quick Count is listed as the present to get, "for the game player."

See the article here.

Jeff_Spelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00955384809598312460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4760511446457612320.post-33948048518144441022007-11-16T07:56:00.000-05:002008-12-10T17:26:36.990-05:00Quick Count at College and NFL Tailgates

The Notre Dame Club of Cincinnati played Quick
Count during a recent Tailgate outside of Notre Dame Stadium prior to the Notre Dame-Air Force game. They loved Pokemon cards and could talk and play with them for hours. At the same time, they didn't show much interest in baseball cards or football cards - the kinds of things I loved at their age. I watched the way they played with their cards and asked them why they liked Pokemon and not the sport cards. They gave me plenty of feedback.

"I realized traditional sports cards with statistics on the back didn't hold their interest, so I began to think about inventing a game using cards. I didn't want to use playing cards or baseball or football cards. I wanted something in between. At first, I worked on inventing a baseball game for them. After a few unsuccessful weeks, I had an idea one morning about a football game. I sat down and wrote out a bunch of thoughts. During the next few weeks, I kept tinkering with it. I played both the football and baseball games with my oldest son. Then I started showing other people my games and getting feedback. The football game was always better received so I began focusing on improving that game. I made many adjustments to the rules, and then finally after a few big changes, everything fell into place very well. I felt like the missing link had been discovered. Now suddenly, everyone who played had amazing comments about the football card game. I realized it was ready."

So, then how did you go from idea to reality?
"At the time, I had left my career in baseball and was looking for new professional opportunities. I had the generous support of a few key people that helped me launch Quick Count. Luckily, the world's largest playing card company was literally 10 minutes from my house. My brother-in-law designed the cards. I wrote the business plan. A friend handled the legal matters. My wife pitched in with many great marketing ideas - and we were off and running."

Tell us about your background in football.
"I was lucky to work with three future College Football Hall-of-Fame coaches during my time at Louisville, Notre Dame and Virginia. I worked with Howard Schnellenberger, Lou Holtz and George Welsh. After arriving at Notre Dame in 1988, I worked with two different college football programs who rose to No. 1 in the country over a three-year stretch from 1988-1990.

During my final season in 1990, I was put in charge of running a Heisman Trophy campaign for our returning quarterback Shawn Moore. I had a $12,000 budget for the Heisman campaign, but it was definitely an uphill battle. The University had not had a top-10 Heisman finisher in nearly 50 years, the state of Virginia and the ACC had not had a top-5 finisher in decades.

"I came up with some innovative ideas on how to market Shawn. Things fell into place. Our team was ranked No. 1 in the nation for three weeks - a first in school history. Shawn had a great season on the field. Eventually, he was invited to be one of the four finalists for the Heisman. I had the privilege of attending the Heisman Trophy ceremonies in New York. It was one of the most thrilling and satisfying moments of my life - sitting at the Downtown Athletic Club on national TV and seeing Shawn get that recognition."

What happened to you professionally after that?
"I left college football after that season. I had already worked with a national championship team (Notre Dame, 1988), and then had the amazing opportunity to work with another No. 1 nationally-ranked team and attend the Heisman ceremonies. I figured it was time to move on to new challenges.

"So, I started a company called Team One in 1991. My focus shifted to baseball. College baseball coaches and scouts at the time were watching and evaluating high school prospects in a very inneficient manner. Every summer scouts and college baseball coaches would travel from game to game and city to city spending valuable time and money just to see one or a few players at a time.

"I created the first high school baseball "showcases." I scouted and identified the top individual players across the country, and invited them, not teams, to come together for "showcases" - which was another word for a scouting combine. Players would take batting practice, run, go through defensive drills and play games. Now suddenly, Major League teams and colleges could go to one location and see dozens of top prospects in a more efficient setting.

"The first showcase I ever ran attracted over 130 Major League scouts and college coaches. I expanded the idea from one event in 1992 to over 50 more showcase events the next decade. Between 1992 and 2006 I worked with over 5,000 players and every Major League team and major college baseball program. Our players were drafted by Major League teams over 1,900 times during that period. Over 170 of them have already reached the Major Leagues. I look back at that time very fondly. I had a tremendously dedicated staff of workers and coaches and developed many friendships with young players and their families. Each time I watch a Major League game now, I'll see one or sometimes even six of seven of my former players on the field at one time.

"In 2006, I realized that after 14-plus years in baseball, I was ready for a new challenge. I wasn't sure at the time what that something was, I just felt called to try something different."

I guess that "something" is Quick Count. Why do you think Quick Count will gain popularity?

"Quick Count is fun. People love to play over and over. They like to build upon their strategies. There is always a different way to try and gain an advantage over your opponent. There is also a certain simplicity to Quick Count - there are no game pieces or batteries. You learn the fundamentals of the game in about 10 minutes. It's a game that rewards strategic thinking.

"At the same time, Quick Count reflects the game of football very well. There are field goals, penalties, passes and runs, and big plays and small plays. Each time through the deck is one quarter, so there is a built-in type of game clock - without really using a clock. People love how portable Quick Count is. You can take it to parties, tailgating or play it with friends while watching football on TV. You can take it on a bus or in the car. During the game, players are rewarded seven points for touchdowns and three points for a field goal.

Want to try a new twist to Quick Count? All you have to do is add a pair of standard six-sided dice to the game.

A friend of ours made a suggestion recently.

Here is his new twist to Quick Count:

1. He creates a "kickoff" at the beginning of each drive. A player rolls the die and gets five yards for rolling a "1," 10 yards for rolling a "2," 15 yards for rolling a "3," and so on; all the way up to a 30-yard return for rolling a "6."

2. A touchdown is worth six points.

3. After scoring a touchdown, the player decides whether to go for 1 point or 2 points.

If he goes for "1" then he rolls the die. If he rolls any number between 1-5 then the "kick" is good and he gets one point. If he rolls a "6" then the extra point attempt is no good.

If the player goes for the two-point conversion, it goes like this: If he rolls a 1, 2 or 3, then he gets two points. If he rolls a 4, 5 or 6 then the two-point attempt is no good.

***

What's Your Opinion? Try the kickoff and the extra points with dice, and let us know what you think. Which do you prefer more - rolling the die for kickoffs, or using it for extra points?

Do you have your own new twist to playing Quick Count?

Please post below.
Jeff_Spelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00955384809598312460noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4760511446457612320.post-55877523119503294112007-08-25T14:24:00.007-04:002008-12-10T17:26:39.922-05:00Quick Count Images

<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5246757014414056770" style="FLOAT: left; "I came up with the rules and the look and feel of the cards. In the beginning I designed the first decks on my computer, printed the faces out, cut them, and taped the faces to old decks of playing cards. At the time, my intention was to make this just for my children. Then, after showing the game to some friends and family, I realized that Quick Count would be fun for a lot of people. There was one big challenge, ‘how could someone with no experience inventing games actually get their idea to market?’

“I was encouraged by recalling a story from my childhood. I grew up in a small Cincinnati suburb called Reading. Around 1970, a man from my hometown had a similar idea and dream. He was a barber, who had invented a really fun card game. He followed his dream and self-funded the first round of decks and sold them out of his barber shop. Not long after that he began selling them at a small grocery store in Reading, which happened to be right across the street from my great-grandmother's house."

That game was the eventual worldwide best-seller Uno.

Decades later, Spelman has pushed forward with his idea as well. In a matter of months, his game had a name – Quick Count - and was being produced by United States Playing Cards in Cincinnati, maker of the world’s leading playing card brands.

Prior to inventing Quick Count, Spelman worked over 20 years in various sports and media positions. Between 1984-1991, he worked in the Sports Information Offices at the University of Louisville, University of Notre Dame and University of Virginia .

During his time in college athletics, Spelman worked with Louisville's 1986 NCAA championship basketball team; Notre Dame's undefeated national championship football team in 1988; and Virginia's No. 1 nationally-ranked football team in 1990. During that 1990 season, Spelman also gained national attention for his innovative Heisman Trophy campaign for quarterback Shawn Moore, who finished 4th in the Heisman voting, the highest finish by a University of Virginia player in over 50 years.

By the age of 24, Spelman had already established a surprisingly diverse and interesting resume in sports and media, enjoying positions many in the business wait a lifetime to experience.

In addition to his work in college athletics Spelman had already worked:

As a Floor Manager for ESPN's Top Rank Boxing

A freelance statistician and researcher for NBC, CBS, ABC and ESPN

Publicity Asst. for the former Louisville Redbirds (AAA baseball team)

Assisistant Media Director for the 1987 Pan American Games serving as a liasion between the Organizing Committee and various Latin American television networks

Sports Intern at WLWT-TV (Cincinnati), where as a 16-year old high schooler, Spelman befriended a big New York Yankees fan in the station's newsroom. "He'd always want to know how the Yankees were doing," Spelman recalls. "I'd drop by his desk a few times each shift to give him updates, or just tear some copy off the AP wire with the update and sit in on his desk if he were busy." The time was the early-1980s. The newsman was Jerry Springer.

In 1991, less than a year after running the Heisman Trophy campaign and working with his second #1 nationally-ranked college football team in three years, Spelman left college athletics to scratch an entreprenuerial itch. He founded Team One Baseball, creating what has become a multi-million dollar high school baseball showcase industry ... forever changing the way top high school baseball players are scouted.

During his first year, Spelman signed Alex Rodriguez and future Cy Young winner Chris Carpenter. He later scouted and signed All-Stars such as David Wright, C.C. Sabathia, Prince Fielder, Mark Teixeira, Roy Halladay and over 165 other Major League Baseball players. Between 1992-2006, Spelman's Team One Showcase players were drafted over 1,900 times and earned over a half a billion dollars in signing bonuses and Major League salaries. Spelman signed future Major Leaguers from over 30 different states, plus Canada, the Dominican Republic and Venezuela. His Showcases also featured players from Australia, Taiwan and Germany.

Spelman's expertise in the baseball scouting industry led to him writing for nationally-popular websites CBSSportsline.com and MLB.com. He also served as the National Baseball Scouting Director for Rivals.com and was a frequent sports talk radio guest across the nation, commenting on the Baseball Draft, and top high school, college and Minor League Baseball players.

Spelman sold Team One Baseball in 2004 and continued to work in baseball before leaving the sport in 2006. He then founded Spelman Media, Inc. and invented the game Quick Count.

Spelman, his wife, and three sons reside in Northern Kentucky.

Q&A with Quick Count Inventor Jeff Spelman

Jeff_Spelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00955384809598312460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4760511446457612320.post-24051744955058474622007-07-22T18:40:00.000-04:002008-12-10T17:26:40.293-05:00

Jeff_Spelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00955384809598312460noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4760511446457612320.post-77032415447397694592007-07-18T12:13:00.005-04:002008-12-10T17:26:40.302-05:00Contact UsContact Us:

Michelle Spelman, Sales Manager
513-314-1436
mspelman[at]quickcountfootball[dot]com

Jeffrey Spelman, CEO
513-259-8514
jspelman[at]quickcountfootball[dot]com

Mail Address:
Quick Count
Flying Pig Games LLC
425 Walnut Street Suite 2112
Cincinnati Ohio 45202

Phone:
513-259-8514

Fax:
513-421-2111Jeff_Spelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00955384809598312460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4760511446457612320.post-78171668424315477952007-06-18T13:03:00.001-04:002008-12-10T17:26:40.590-05:00Quick Count Rules: 2 Players and NEW 4 Player RulesFor 2 Players:

To Begin:
• Deal both players three cards, face down.
• Then, turn one card up and place the rest of the deck face down.

To Win the Game:
• The game lasts four quarters. Each quarter is one time through the deck.
• Players score points by advancing exactly 100 yards through run, pass and catch cards; or by kicking a field goal. Each touchdown is worth seven points and each field goal worth three. The player with the most points at the end of the game wins. In case of a game-ending tie, shuffle all cards and begin an overtime period playing the normal game rules. First one to score wins.

The Play:
• At the beginning of each turn, the player chooses the top card from the face-up pile or the top card from the deck.
• Play a run card or a matching pass and catch combination face up in front of you. Place each play next to one another so all players can see the yardage on the current drive.
• If you are able to successfully make a play, then draw from the deck the same number of cards you just played and repeat turn.
• In order to score a touchdown, you must advance exactly 100 yards on a drive (for instance you can’t play a 20-yard run card if you are on the 10-yard line).
• The drive continues as long as you are able to make a play. When unable to make a play, discard one card to the pile face-up, always ending each turn with three cards in your hand.
• At the end of the first and third quarters, pick up the pile and combine with the cards already used in scoring drives from all players. Shuffle and continue with the next quarter. Be sure to keep the cards in your hands and the current cards being used for a drive. At the end of the second quarter (halftime), pick up all cards in the deck and shuffle, then begin the third quarter.

The Strategy:
• You can play a run card anytime during your turn. You must play a pass and catch card together, and only if their yardage matches.
• There is one field goal card in each deck. You can play it anytime during your turn, once your current drive has advanced at least 70 yards. It is especially useful at the end of the 2nd and 4th quarters.
• There is one penalty card in each deck. You can strategically play it to negate a big or key play by your opponent. You must play the card before your opponent makes another play.
• There is ongoing strategy as to which cards to keep and which to discard, as you move downfield while also trying to keep your opponent from advancing as well.

© 2007 Spelman Media, Inc.

These rules are also found on two rules cards in each Quick Count deck.

Want to add kickoffs and extra points to Quick Count? Click here for details.

NEW! For 4 Players:

By popular demand, we are pleased to introduce new game rules to accomodate 4 players!

4-Player Rules · All rules from the 2-player games apply. · Use one deck. · Teammates sit across the table from one another (alternating spots between teams). · All four players do not play their own drive. Instead, each team shares a drive. The player who puts down the first card of any drive “hosts” that team’s drive. Either teammate can make plays on the drive when it is their turn. An optional addition to this game is to adopt the “pick it up” rule. Both teams must agree to this style of play before the game begins. If a player wants to pick up a card from the discard pile, he must tell his teammate to “pick up the card.” The teammate then picks up the top card from the discard pile. The player must immediately decide whether to pass that particular card to their teammate, or keep the card, and give their teammate another one from their hand. When passing the card to your teammate, keep the card face down. Play continues. The player adds that particular card to their hand. If they only have three cards in their hand at that point, then draw the top card off the team’s deck. A play or a discard then has to be made.
Jeff_Spelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00955384809598312460noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4760511446457612320.post-8425207018261125182007-04-28T06:30:00.000-04:002007-10-28T06:31:26.615-04:00Test EmailE-Mail:E-mail Jeff Spelman Jeff_Spelmanhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00955384809598312460noreply@blogger.com
